our story

From Vision to Impact: The DC HOSA Journey

Where Healthcare Passion Meets Leadership Opportunity

In the nation's capital, where policy is made and history unfolds, DC HOSA stands as a testament to what's possible when young people are given the opportunity to lead, learn, and serve. Our story is one of growth, resilience, and an  commitment to developing the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Our Beginning

DC HOSA was established as the District of Columbia state association of HOSA-Future Health Professionals, bringing the national organization's mission to the unique context of Washington, DC. From our earliest days, we recognized that the District's students deserved access to the same opportunities for healthcare career development available to their peers across the country.

What started as a small network of interested students and dedicated educators has grown into a thriving community of 750 affiliated members across 16 chapters, representing both middle school and secondary school divisions throughout the District.

Our Community: Who We Serve

DC HOSA members come from every corner of the District—from Capitol Hill to Anacostia, from Georgetown to Congress Heights. We serve:

  • Secondary school students (grades 9-12) exploring healthcare careers through academic health science programs
  • Middle school students (grades 6-8) discovering their passion for medicine and healthcare early
  • Adult members, including advisors and healthcare professionals who support our mission
  • Alumni who've gone on to successful healthcare careers and return to mentor the next generation

Our Unique Context

Operating in Washington, DC gives us  access to world-class healthcare institutions, federal health agencies, and policy makers. Our students don't just read about healthcare in textbooks—they can walk into some of the nation's top hospitals, visit the NIH, and connect with leaders shaping the future of American healthcare.

This geographic advantage comes with responsibility. DC HOSA prepares students not just to work in healthcare, but to lead it—to be advocates for health equity, champions of community health, and voices for underserved populations.
